See below for more information on each veteran.
Please click the names below to leave memorials for the fallen at CNN’s CASUALTIES.
NOTE: Though many online sites, including CNN, list various statistics about each of these fallen troops, I’d like to thank GOOGLE for using the “Details” sections from this page to build an interactive Google map linking each soldier to his or her respective Iowa city.

R.I.P. Justice
Thank you, everyone, for taking time to visit and remember our fallen soldiers. So many, so young, so brave.
What about the military men and women that took their own lives from ptsd because of being over there?
That is an excellent point, Michelle. This page currently features only those who died while in Iraq or Afghanistan, but I would have no problem adding a related page for those who made it home, only to later take his or her own life due to PTSD. I’m not quite sure where I’d find such a list, but will do some checking.
Over the years, I’d kept up this page by frequently visiting the http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/war.casualties/ website and also as I learned of new casualties via the daily news.
Coincidentally, I’d originally started building this page after my nephew, Matthew “Doc” Clayton — a US Navy Corpsman who served in combat with the Marines — returned from Iraq with PTSD and other problems. A gifted mathematician (ready to enter his senior year in college when he signed up to serve), he’d planned on finishing his degree after his tour; he wanted to get his master’s degree and teach math at the college level. Instead, he’s on disability and still fighting demons.
Jody, I use a site titled desmoinesregister\fallen. also Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs stays current with Iowa fallen. We do a daily profile of Iowa veterans who fell in Iraq or Afghan on Iowa Thunder Ride……….
Thank you, thank you. RIP Heroes
R.I.P. soldiers
I lived in Marshalltown IA. Seeing this broke my jeart and knowing so many other Soldiers from my country died because of what they believed in breaks my heart!! Thank you for your service and your sacrifice soldiers you are 100% a hero!!
I just went through the pictures with my husband and our 11 year old son. They went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa yesterday and put flags on graves of our fallen men and women. I’m proud of all the Scouts from Troop 120 who spent their beautiful second day of summer vacation looking for and honoring these very men and women. Showing them the faces really brings it home for us. May God hold them all in His arms.
May God Bless all of you for your ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our Country. I thank you for your service. Semper Fi.
Army Sgt. t Class Scott Carney, 37, of Ankeny, died Aug. 24 when the Humvee in which he was a passenger rolled during a convoy operation near Herat, Afghanistan. Carney and a soldier from Ohio died in the accident. Carney was assigned to the Iowa National Guard’s d Brigade Combat Team, h Infantry Division in Boone.
If you could, I didn’t see my brother on here, and I just needed to say this…
Sgt. Robert (Rob) John Griffith
Born in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, but moved to Iowa with family a few years later to first Cedar Rapids, then to Ely, where our parents still currently live.
Rob was born August 4th, 1985.
He served a total of 26 months in Iraq from 2004 to 2009. He was honorably discharged.
He commented suicide in July 25th, 2010, not even a year after being discharged.
I was only 8 when he died, and his death was the worst thing that has happened to me and my family.
If you could have met Rob, you would have automatically liked him. He was that guy everyone loved and remembered as funny, caring, and incredibly smart. Rob was the best brother ever, loved and forever missed by many.
Brother • Soldier • Friend
I just want him to be remembered because sometimes people only think about the quote “heroes”, the ones that died in action while deployed.
Truth?
There are thousands soldiers that commit suicide while still deployed or that have been recently discharged, that aren’t brought to attention because of the fact that they killed themselves. For Rob’s case, this was a result of untreated PTSD.
I want to remind y’all that this is wrong and selfish to say the least. These soldiers shouldn’t be This needs to be brought into the light.
